Change is in the air at Soaring Wings Ranch. The physical changes are almost imperceptible as the autumn takes its own sweet time about developing here in Arkansas, thanks to Indian summer and global warming. However, the fields are now taking on a russet hue, and leaves are responding with a burst of color to the recent rains and sudden drop in temperature. There have been other less subtle changes at the ranch these past three months, as the deer and wild turkeys have made room for more humans to occupy the 200-acre property.

When I was a child, if there was one word that could have defined our home, it would be anger. Not love or discipline, kindness or nurture, but red-hot, raw anger. My father was an angry man, the neighborhood grouch, and the best defense meant avoiding him as much as possible. Much like giving a chained and angry dog a lot of room, we all skirted around him to avoid getting barked and snapped at. In later years I would understand that my dad was struggling with depression. Not until I was an adult and waylaid by this same darkness, did I understand what chains he had binding him. I have heard it said that depression is anger suppressed. Perhaps so, and with it comes unhealthy coping skills.

Couple inspired by son’s challenges

It all started about 10 years ago when our teenager got involved with alcohol that led very quickly to alcoholism. We endured numerous car accidents some serious, many DWI’s, jail visits, court dates and rehab facilities, all with much heartache. What do you do? How do you deal with this? What could we have done differently in raising our child? We learned about tough love and faith in giving our child to God when there is nothing else you can do.
